This trip covers the geological time period from 225 to 100 million years ago, the Mesozoic. As Devon continues it’s journey through the climatic belts, crossing the equator and entering the Northern Hemisphere, local rocks record a change from hot arid desert landscapes to marine conditions. THE LIZARD and WEST CORNWALL

The Lizard and Geevor Tin Mine.
The Lizard is famous for the unusual rock known as Serpentine, part of an ancient ocean floor complex which was pushed up, instead of down, when the earth’s crustal plates collided to form the super continent of Pangaea. This took place around the same time that the granites of the Cornubian batholith were intruded. Part of the Variscan orogeny, 280 million years ago.

West Cornwall is a haven for mineral collectors, and the trip includes a visit to Geevor tin mine, where we descend into the old mine workings. Minerals can be collected, and we walk along the beautiful coastline to Pendeen, where the pump houses are built into the cliff line.
