Welcome To

THE LYME REGIS MARINE CENTRE

The Lyme Regis Marine Centre, situated just west of the Cobb and almost on Monmouth Beach itself, opened in 1997 continuing a long tradition of marine activities and education on this site. Today it is home to the Lyme Regis International School of Boatbuilding and The Lyme Regis Marine School.

The Centre's buildings were constructed by the Royal Air Force in the late 1930's to provide a base for their air/sea rescue services that covered the whole of this region of the English Channel until the mid 1960's.

For the next twenty-five years it was run as a centre for outdoor activities with some of the facilities altered to suit this new role. The buildings were then extensively refurbished and refitted as the Lyme Regis Marine Centre in 1996 to maximise the use of the excellent existing workshops and facilities.

The Lyme Regis International School of Boatbuilding has been established as the core activity of the Lyme Regis Marine Centre. Teaching people to build boats of the highest quality using both traditional and modern methods and materials, the LRISB has created and maintains a centre of excellence in boatbuilding in Lyme Regis.

  • The City & Guilds and NVQ 38-week professional boatbuilding courses are practical, well structured training covering all aspects of traditional and modern techniques.
  • Intensive short courses, offered throughout the year, are suitable for the amateur and the professional alike. A wide range of 5-day and weekend courses are offered led by word recognised craftsmen including Jack Chippendale, John Kerr and Colin Henwood, as well as our own staff tutors.

The Lyme Regis Marine School is uniquely positioned within an exciting boatbuilding and marine environment. The LRMS offers the very best standards of navigation and boat-handing training to individuals and groups seeking to broaden their seamanship skills.
